How to Respond to Water Bankruptcy?
The Green Earth Action Foundation (GEAF) is set to launch ACT for Water, a three-month initiative dedicated to advancing dialogue, collaboration, and action on one of the world's most pressing environmental challenges—water security.
Structured around three interconnected pillars—ACT I: Advocacy, ACT II: Collaboration, and ACT III: Transition—the initiative will bring together experts, practitioners, policymakers, and young leaders to explore innovative approaches to building a more resilient and water-secure future.
The initiative begins with ACT I – Advocacy, featuring the sixth episode of GEAF's Climate Action Conversationswebinar series, titled "How to Respond to Water Bankruptcy?" The session will examine the emerging concept of water bankruptcy, introduced in the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health's 2026 report Global Water Bankruptcy: Living Beyond Our Hydrological Means in the Post-Crisis Era. The report argues that prolonged overexploitation, pollution, and unsustainable management of freshwater resources have pushed many regions beyond water stress into a new era where water systems are increasingly unable to recover.
Against the backdrop of preparations for the 2026 UN Water Conference and the International Decade for Action: Water for Sustainable Development, the webinar will provide a timely platform for discussing the governance, policy, environmental, and social dimensions of this growing global challenge.
The event will open with welcome remarks from the GEAF team, followed by an introduction to the Foundation's mission of empowering young people and communities to lead sustainable environmental action. Participants will also learn more about the GEAF Ambassador Programme, which equips emerging climate leaders with the training, mentorship, and resources needed to design and implement impactful community initiatives.
Delivering the keynote address will be Tapas Kumar Mollick, a GEAF Ambassador and youth climate leader from Bangladesh. Drawing on his experience working with vulnerable coastal communities in the Sundarbans, Tapas will share practical perspectives on community resilience, ecosystem restoration, and youth-led climate action.
The expert roundtable will bring together distinguished speakers representing international organizations, academia, and policy institutions, including specialists in freshwater governance, transboundary water cooperation, climate adaptation, sustainable development, and water diplomacy. Throughout the discussion, panellists will explore the drivers of water bankruptcy, the implications for agriculture, biodiversity, public health, conflict prevention, and economic development, while examining opportunities for stronger governance, international cooperation, and inclusive policy responses.
Participants will also have the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers during an interactive question-and-answer session, creating space for dialogue and knowledge exchange among professionals, students, researchers, and climate practitioners from around the world.
As the first phase of the ACT for Water initiative, ACT I – Advocacy aims to strengthen understanding of today's water challenges while encouraging informed dialogue that can shape practical and collaborative solutions. The initiative will continue in the coming months through ACT II – Collaboration and ACT III – Transition, expanding the conversation into partnerships and pathways for implementation.
GEAF invites all those interested in climate action, sustainable development, water governance, and environmental leadership to join this timely discussion and contribute to a growing global conversation on protecting one of our planet's most vital resources.
