Save Every Drop Challenge - Umuganda practice from Rwanda, a group effort in ecosystem preservation

In Rwanda we use a community tradition called Umuganda to clean and build water trenches together. On the last Saturday of every month, neighbors meet to dig ditches, clear blocked streams, and plant trees near water sources. How It WorksGroup Work: Everyone from a neighborhood comes out to work as a team.Digging Trenches: People dig small ditches along roads and fields to catch rain.Guiding Water: These channels lead rain safely into the ground or farms instead of washing away the soil.

The Umuganda water trenches directly address two severe local challenges: intense soil erosion and destructive flooding during the rainy seasons. The Core ProblemsHeavy Rainfall: Rwanda experiences sudden, torrential downpours.Hilly Terrain: Water rushes down steep hills very quickly.Soil Erosion: Fast-moving water washes away fertile farming soil.Mudslides: Unchecked water weakens the hillsides, risking dangerous landslides.Flooding: Excess runoff floods homes and businesses in lower valleys.
